Am I going in the right direction?

You're going in the right direction by the fact that you're actually plotting and writing the story. Maybe the story will be good, maybe it wont, but the important thing is that you're actually writing it, because that is the only way you can improve. The plot sounds good, but not personally my tastes, but really it's not me that counts at the moment. Write what you want and enjoy doing it, and remember to edit!
