My civic bogs down and dont know why?

My 97 honda civic ex coups bogs down bad after I run it kind of hard. Its a five speed vtec and ill shift around 4500 and 5000 rpm. I don't do that often but when I wanna go kind of fast ill do that. But afterwards it will bog down. I know after 4500 rpm the vtec kicks in but why does it bog down after wards when I want to drive normally? Ill be in third gear and it will go really slow and wont pick up speed until it hits 3200 rpm and if im gong up a hill It wont make it up unless I put it in second gear. When it bogs down like that I can press the gas pedal all the way down and it wont gain speed. Someone please tell me what's wrong.
